Who Knows What a Room Is

No. 49 in Top 50 Bee Gees’ Songs 1966-72

By Barry & Maurice Gibb
Lead Vocal: Barry
Recording: 1969 [unreleased]

“Only a lonely place”

Who Knows What a Room Is starts off like another Kitty Can until Barry’s snarling vocal kicks in behind a blues-rock backing letting us know we’ve shifted into slightly uncharted territory.

The song was recorded for possible inclusion on Cucumber Castle and as a testing ground for Barry’s Lennon impression. I suspect it would have undergone sweetening before qualifying for the album.

Room‘s central image is a kind of slightly surrealistic, sarcastic riddle, at odds with the more generic imagery of Cucumber Castle.

It cries out for a ripping guitar solo to finish the job.

No 48 I Lay Down and Die
No 50 Everybody Clap
