If Only I Had My Mind on Something Else

No. 29 in Top 50 Bee Gees’ Songs 1966-72

By Barry & Maurice Gibb
Lead Vocal: Barry
Album: Cucumber Castle 1970
Single A-side (US) 1970

“If I could get the nerve to plant the seed”

A wistful song given a softly lush arrangement.

A man is unable to look away from a love which has ended.  Major seventh chords – rarely used by the brothers until this point – add to the languidly sentimental mood.

If Only I Had My Mind on Something Else is an unexpectedly laid-back opener for Cucumber Castle an album where the production sometimes steals the show.  I like the fact that it’s not quite pop, nor country nor soul.  There is something almost unassuming about it, not trying too hard to impress.

Interesting that some of the sailing imagery of previous album Odessa lingers on here.
